A long time ago in China it was very important to have long fingernails. Apparently, long nails indicated that you did very little work and therefore, you must be successful and wealthy. The trouble is that when your fingernails get that long they tend to break easily. These Beautiful, Highly Decorated Finger Guards were used to protect the long nails.
This Vintage Chinese Silver Finger Nail Guard Brooch / Pin is a Rare & Fantastic Find in today's market and more so because of it's well-preserved excellent condition, from the Early 19th century. You can wear this brooch pinned on, wear it on your finger or display it as an "Object d' Art" anywhere!
Each side is richly enameled with beautiful guilloche vibrant colored flowers, featuring layers of rich hues and transparent enamels, including different shades of blue (cobalt and sky blue) and lavender. There are groupings of three stylized leaves, also in blue, alternating with the flowers. On center, there are Genuine Natural Turquoise and Coral cabochons, deep set in smooth silver bezels. Hand-applied silver flourishes and tiny beads accents can be seen throughout. The larger end of the brooch shows a wavy, twisted rope silver design which carries over to the other side.
The top of the pin is hollow, (where the finger is placed). The back of the top is marked "SILVER" on a rectangular cartouche. The pin has a locking clasp, which is secure.
Measurements: 3 3/8" L x 5/8" W, tapering to 1/4". The Condition is Excellent.
Please note that you may polish the silver to a high shine if desired. We left the decision whether or not to preserve the well earned patina up to the buyer.
