Playtime Surprises is a mechanical book by Ernest Nister, verses by Clifton Bingham, published in London England, ca: 1890 and printed in Bavaria. This book has 15 pages with 6 full color dissolving chromolithograph illustrations and numerous and in-text black and white illustrations. An uncommon children's book featuring 6 remarkable mechanical pictures that revolve by pulling a ribbon to reveal hidden images beneath. All pictures work perfectly. I have selected two that have been photographed in both positions. Has the extremely rare original dust jacket and probably, the only know existing original dust jacket for this edition. The dust jacket illustration replicates the title page illustration. Dust jacket is surprisingly clean with spine edge wear, minor soiling and with a couple of tiny closed tears. Boards are very clean and front illustrated board bright and colorful. Internally, a near fine edition with just a tiny bit of minor damage to the 4th picture, which does not interfere with the mechanical operation and hardly noticeable (mentioning for accuracy). End pages aged toned and front 2nd end page has small penciled in research notes. Text pages are slightly age toned and show some light soiling, but clean overall. Binding is both staples and string and holding well with just a touch of looseness to 2nd text page. Other then what I have described, there are no loose, torn or missing pages and binding holding well.
Measurements are 9" x 8 3/4". Book is complete and all pages present. SHIPPING AND INSURANCE IS FREE.
