Martha Graham by Barbara Morgan, Sixteen Dances in Photographic Sequence. Published by Duell, Sloan & Pearce, Inc., New York, NY, 1941. Scarce first edition with original dust jacket and signed on the first fly by Martha Graham. A very nice copy of this first edition that is filled with photographic sequences of sixteen of her dances. Also included at last few pages is a complete choreographic record of chronological list of dances; description of outstanding dances not listed; members of dance groups; important tours; and special performances and events, all from 1926 through 1941. Original dust jacket is very good with some creasing to upper front edge of jacket, a few tiny closed tears at edges and a bit of scraping to outer right margin of spine. Otherwise, a really nice jacket. Cloth covered boards pretty clean front and rear with some spots to gutters. Internally, very good with some age toning to end pages, however, inscription and signature bold and clear. Text pages clean, supple and photographs very clear. There are no rips, tears, loose or missing pages and binding is tight. Also included is an insert located at front end page, "Martha Graham And Dance Company held at the 46th Street Theater at 46th Street, New York, West of Broadway", on the one side and the other side is portrait photo of Martha Graham. Also in very good condition.
Martha Graham (B: May 11, 1894-D: April 1, 1991) was probably the finest American dancer and choreographer of her time and danced and choreographed for over 70 years. She was the first dancer ever to perform at the White House and would eventually go onto receive the highest civilian award presented in the United States; The Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her style of dance fundamentally reshaped American dance and continues to be taught worldwide to this day.
