This is a beautiful vintage tin clockwork train set in its original box. Made by Meccano Mfg, this Hornby Tank Passenger Train Set Number 101 has great detail. The toy steam locomotive, made between 1949 and 1954, was built by Meccano Ltd for their 0-gauge line of Hornby toy trains. It features a LNER 460 locomotive, two LNER teak passenger coaches and one LNER teak full brake car. Also included are 12 pieces of curved track. This set is in its original box. The back of the locomotive date it to 1949 until 1954 where it's marked "Hornby / Type 101 / Made in England / By Meccano Ltd".
The toy tank locomotive has a lithographed tin-printed livery in green with black and white fine lining. Tin printed details included cab hand rails and boiler bands. The cab sides, water tanks, boiler and the spoked coupled wheels are green and the cab roof, cylinders and smoke box and framing are black. The locomotive is fitted with a steam dome, front and rear buffers and lamp brackets on the smoke box door and front buffer beam. It is clockwork operated. The company initials LNER (London and North Eastern Railway) are printed in gold letters with red shading and are spaced out across the water tanks, underneath which is the locomotive number "460".
This vintage set is in very good condition for its age and looks like it was lovingly cared for. There is some scratching on the roofs of the cars and some minor scraping of the black paint on the engine. This is a vintage toy so there is minor scratching and wear marks. It is in working condition, the key is present and the track is intact and in good condition. The box has its original insert and is in fair condition with some scuffing and chipping of the blue paper cover. The interior divider is ripped and shows signs of age and use. Two of the lid's corners are split. The box measures 16" x 14" x 3 1/2" and weighs approximately 7 lbs.
