is now SOLDA beautiful enameled salt cellar from Russia. This Melchior open salt has a green and red "berry" design. Also possibly used as a caviar dish, this USSR piece has a lipped glass insert. This type of metalwork is also sometimes referred to a "Mstera", a region in Russia known for its fine craftsmanship from delicate lacquer boxes to enamel work and jewelry. Melchior or Melhior is a nickle/copper alloy that was used by jewelry makers and metal smiths in this region of Russia.
The open salt stands on three legs and measures 2 1/2 inches in diameter, with the insert, and stands approximately 1 1/4 inch tall. It is in excellent vintage condition and has a maker's mark and silver mark on the bottom (see photos).
