This exquisite antique Art Nouveau belt buckle is embellished in a champlevé enamel. The blue, green and white enamel is set within "cells" giving it great depth and dimension. The two part buckle has mirrored images and as a whole make up a stunning Art Nouveua scroll work design. The curved outlines and swirling foliage create a beautiful piece for jewelry making or a fashion piece.
Champlevé is an enamelwork technique in which the hollows made in a metal surface are filled with colored enamel. It is a centuries old art that exhibits exquisite craftsmanship.
This brass and enamel belt buckle measures 4 1/2" in length and is 2 3/8" wide. The piece are connected with a hook and loop closure. There are two bars on the back to loop ribbon or fabric through. This Art Nouveau piece is in very good condition (especially considering its age). There is minor spots of green enamel that has chipped on the left side of the buckle and some light crazing and chipping of the white and blue enamel on the right side (see photo 5).
A truly amazing piece of artwork to wear or admire.
