Two miniature dollhouse rugs with Turkish carpet designs. These two miniature rugs were originally collected from tobacco pouches and cigarette packs. Called "silkies" they were a way for manufacturers to appeal to women. They were often used in quilting and other sewing projects as well as used by children for the miniature dollhouses.
These two rugs have similar "Turkish" rug designs in geometrical patterns. The larger of the two has a pink background with a light blue and tan design and features pink silk fringe on each end. The smaller carpet has an orange/gold background with a blue and red design. This carpet has yellow silk fringe on each end.
Pink Dollhouse Rug: 5 1/4 inches by 3 inches
Orange Dollhouse Rug: 4 1/2 inches by 2 1/8 inches
Both rugs are in excellent vintage condition. The colors are vibrant and the fringe is intact. There may be some slight curling on the edges which can be uncurled by laying the carpet under a heavy book or other object.
"Nineteenth and early 20th century tobacco companies had some unique ways of promoting their products. These promotions made possible the lesser-known practice of sewing quilts and other decorative items out of silk and flannel tobacco premiums."womenfolk" website.
