"The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown, in Nottinghamshire" was written and illustrated by Howard Pyle. This well loved classic book is an early edition dated 1911 (the first edition was printed in 1883) and was published by Charles Scribner's Sons This beautiful book contains 47 black and white intricate, Medieval style illustrations and ornaments. This classic literary book begins with Robin Hood, who is on his way to an archery contest, but accidentally kills one of the sheriff's officers. Robin is then required to live an outlaw's life. The Sheriff vows to catch Robin Hood for his crimes. Robin gathers a group of Merry Men and the book takes us on an their adventures of outwitting the Sheriff.
This rare, antique book has its original russet cloth boards with an elaborate illustration accented in red with a gilded title. The spine features a similar design and gilded lettering. The book is 296 pages in length and is in very good+ condition. There is some minor scuffing along the cover's edges and a little wear on the spine (see photos) and some spots of white and black on the back. There is a small stain on pages 7 and 8 of the index where I believe a flower was pressed. Otherwise the pages are clean and very minimally yellowed and the binding is tight with only a surface split in the books inside cover. This does not, however, effect the binding and is only superficial. The book will be shipped Media Mail unless otherwise requested.
If you are a book collector or know one, this is a must for any classic literature library. Finding this book in such good condition is a real rarity for such a popular literary classic.
