"Play Time Unit Of How And Why - a program of child mental development designed for young children to learn by doing nursery through primary grades", is a very collectible portfolio of sheets with activities for children produced in the 1950s.
Learning numbers, discovering wild life and doing art pages are just some of the many activities this set includes. The pages are contained in a folio cover that ties with a string. There are 41 individual "packets" than can be up to a couple of pages stapled together with directions for a each page of activities. The back lists 44 different activities so I am assuming three are missing. One of the activity sets contains a paper doll family with mom, dad, and two children to cut out. Other activities include making a garden for the family and making clothes for them as well as other activities including copying letters, learning time, making a book of pets and many more.
The back of the cover lists the following "suggested activities" categories with a list of 44 individual activity packs:
Games For Good Times
Gifts and Decorations
Fun For Tiny Tots
Good Times With Pet
Fun With Birds
Painting Can Be Fun
Flags To Love
Famous Men to Know
Fun With Maps
Drawing Is Fun
Using Thread and Yarn
Using Pieces of Wood
Fun in The Kitchen
Fun With Numbers and Letters
A "How And Why Program" book is referenced on several of the packets but this must have been a separate book as it is not contained in this folio and would not fit in the packaging. Each activity is self explanatory, however, and I believe the "guide" probably gave teaching theories or themes that could be paired. Whether making a card for father and mother, or making a garden for the paper dolls, each activity is brightly illustrated and has complete instructions.
This educational and playtime activity set is in very good vintage condition. There are three or four pages that have been done in pencil by a child (mostly the copying numbers and letters). The folio cover has some bumping and light soiling. The black string is intact to tie the set together There is a portion of the back that has been lifted, presumably by a label or piece of tape (see photos). Also, one of the little side flaps is missing (see photos) The box measures approximately 10 3/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches. Each sheet set measures approximately 10 inches by 7 inches. This collectible set will be shipped Media Mail unless otherwise requested.
A wonderful collectible children's piece for matting and displaying in a kid's playroom or nursery or to use with young children.
