Ernest The Policeman" was written and illustrated by S G Hulme Beaman. This vintage childrens book is lavishly illustrated with six full color plates. There are also small black and white drawings sprinkled in with the text.
Sydney George Hulme Beaman, born in 1887. He was the creator of the Toytown stories and their characters including Larry the Lamb and Ernest the Policeman. Toytown was a radio series on the BBC in the 1930s. broadcast for Children's Hour on the Home Service. Each story or play was based on a set of puppets. The series starred Larry the Lamb and his clever sidekick, Dennis the Dachshund. In each story a misunderstanding, often arising from a device created by the inventor, Mr. Inventor, occurs which involves Ernest the Policeman, the disgruntled Mr Growser the Grocer and the Mayor. This book grew out of the popularity of these stories.
This vintage childrens illustrated book has blue cloth covers and an embossed illustrated red and black cover. The book is in good/fair vintage condition. There is some foxing and yellowing of the pages. The binding is tight but shows signs of age with a cracked seam and loose frontispiece. The cover has some lifting and scuffing. The spine has some light fraying at the top and bottom and the corners are bumped. The book measures 8" x 5 3/4" and weighs approximately 2 pounds.
