"A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson and illustrated by Fern Bisel Peat. This adorable illustrated childrens book has amazing full color and black and white illustrations of Mr. Stevenson's poems. Published by Saalfield Publishing, it is copyrighted 1940. Verses include "The Land of Nod", "To My Mother" "Looking-Glass River" and many more.
This is one of my favorite children's book illustrators. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1893, Mrs. Peat attended Ohio Wesleyan University. She was an accomplished author and illustrator and together with her husband she founded and ran a successful interior decorating studio specializing in designing children’s rooms, murals, textiles and wallpaper. She also designed several children’s wards, hospitals and orphanages.
This hard cover vintage book has illustrated board covers with a green cloth spine. I actually have two copies of this book, both published in 1940. The difference is in the paper weight. This green spine edition has heavy weight paper thus making it a bit heavier. The cover has some light bumping on the corners, a spot of lifting on the bottom right, some shelf wear at the spine as well as some light chipping along the edges. The inside pages are clean and the binding is tight. This would be a fabulous book to share with the little ones in your life or to use as decor in a nursery or playroom. The book measures 11" x 9 " and weighs approximately 1 pound 12 ounces.
