Jack and the Beanstalk" is a Puppet Storybook illustrated with puppets by T Izawa and S Hijikata in 1968. It features a lenticular 3d picture on the front cover and has wonderful full color photographed illustrations of puppets playing the roles in the story.
This vintage board book features the artwork of Shiba Productions who produced a whole line of these puppet illustrated books in the 1960s. The detail and color are phenomenal. Shiba Productions was a puppet animation studio that was founded in 1958 by three men: writer/editor Tadasu Iizawa, artist/designer Shigeru Hijikata, and puppet maker and animator Kihachirō Kawamoto. The studio specialized in puppet animation for television commercials. In addition to animation, Shiba Productions also created puppets for picture books, magazines, and print advertising.
The books were called “3D” or “Puppet Storybooks” not only because they feature photographs of three-dimensional puppets and sets, but also because the front cover featured a full color hologram or lenticular photograph. This novelty cover meant that the books were quite eye-catching when displayed on the shelves of bookstores and libraries. It also made the storybooks quite memorable for children who grew up with them.
This vintage book is in very good condition. The pages are clean and the binding is tight. There is an original price tag on the front cover for $1.25.
A fun vintage book for kids today as well as grown-ups who remember these fun books.
