Glenville State College Clock Tower 111th Anniversary Commemorative Decanter by Mike Wayne Originals Distilling Company 1983 Limited Edition. This rare, Limited Edition, and very unique whiskey decanter was made by Mike Wayne Originals in 1982 to commemorate the 111th Anniversary of Glenville State College, founded in 1872. This unique decanter is made of heavy glazed ceramic and is shaped to resemble the Glenville Normal School Clock Tower, which is located on the Glenville College campus, and until recently had a huge bell inside which rang hourly time.
Measures 6-3/4 inches tall and 3-7/8 inches wide. Decanter is in overall excellent condition with its only flaw being a hairline crack on the bottom of one corner that runs almost an inch up the front, lower right corner; No chips or other damage. Considering its age, this crack is minor and really doesn’t detract from its overall unique appearance. There is no loss of coloring; any white areas on brown are glare from camera flash.
Front side of decanter is molded in fine detail to resemble light brown bricks and a light gray gabled roof, has a clock face, complete with hands and numbers, bell speakers and louvers, and “State Normal School”. Sides are smooth and in same light brown color. Top of decanter has a 1-inch diameter hole with a cork inside (appears to be broken off). I have not tried to remove the cork.
Backside of decanter is white and has this in blue lettering, along with the Glenville State College Seal: “THIS LIMITED EDITION DECANTER COMMEMORATES AND CELEBRATES THE 111TH ANNIVERSARY OF GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE, A LEADING EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR OVER A CENTURY – MAKING SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR STATE, OUR COUNTRY AND OUR WORLD”
One side of decanter has a gold foil label attached near the bottom edge which reads, “Mike Wayne Originals, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Bottled by Mike Wayne Distilling Co., Bardstown, Kentucky” and “80 Proof 750 ML”.
Bottom of decanter is white glazed and is embossed “MIKE WAYNE DISTILLING CO.” with a copyright mark. While researching this item, I found an interesting article online from The Glenville Mercury, the Glenville State Alumni newsletter, dated May 5, 1982 about the Alumni Weekend being observed which reads in part, “The breaking of the mold of the GSC Commemorative Decanter will take place…in the amphitheater to kick off the 111th Anniversary Celebration. On hand for the event will be Mike Wayne, president of Mike Wayne Originals, Inc. of Beverly Hills, CA.” I also read that the historic bell, weighing 1,000 lbs., has recently been removed from the Clock Tower to be relocated and “ to make this historic display easily visible and available to everyone who comes on campus.”
This decanter is very special!
