This vintage Western memorabilia silhouette advertising shadowbox picture was made to advertise Merle's Western Store (location unknown). It features a scenic view of a stream, trees, and mountains behind back painted glass with an image of a gold miner and his mule, panning for gold in the foreground. The scenic print is mounted to a curved piece of cardboard that gives it dimension like a shadowbox picture.
The glass measures 8 by 10 inches and is painted to form a border in colors of deep burgundy and light tan. Silhouette of miner and his mule are in matching colors, painted in the lower right corner and they appear to be standing in water, as if in a stream, while panning for gold. Overall thickness of picture is 3/4-inch.
An advertisement is printed in small letters in the stream area of the scenic picture which reads, "You "Strike it Rich" When You Trade with MERLE'S WESTERN STORE".
In overall good vintage condition; Glass paint has some wear and one corner has a slight chip. Cardboard back shows evidence of being taped into place with masking tape. I'm assuming this was a treasured keepsake and previous owners tried to repair and save it the best way possible.
The cardboard back appears to have had a punched opening with perhaps a cord for hanging. This has been replaced with a more modern white tape/stick-on type hanger. You may want to replace this one too with a more secure hanger before displaying it on a wall surface.
Cardboard is marked on back with hanging instructions, and the manufacturer's name, "The Vernon Company, Newton, Iowa".
This handsome vintage piece came from a large estate collection of Western Memorabilia. Could be a great item for your collection!
