Several designs of cups and saucers by Homer Laughlin China were made with this Poppy and Rose pattern. The design was introduced by Laughlin in the 1930's and continued in production through the 1950's. During that production time, the pattern was placed on many different shapes. The first was the Kwaker, then Brittany, this Virginia Rose, and others. The Virginia Rose shaped pieces in this design originally offered a silver or platinum trim which by now is often all but worn away as on these four cups.
The Virginia Rose shape in the Poppy & Rose design is a bit of an uncommon find now. These cups carry the embossed scalloped and ridged pattern that is unique to the Virginia Rose shape with scalloped bases. As mentioned, they originally had a platinum (silver colored) trim that still remains on the handle of each cup but otherwise has mostly worn away. If you are a collector who is not a purist you may wish to just remove whats left of the trim around the mouth of each cup--or if like me, you may just enjoy them as they are. One of the cups has what appears to be a repair on the side (see close up photo) and another has the often found glaze pops or prominent sand from the clay showing under the glaze from manufacture.
The original matching saucers would most likely have also carried a platinum trim but these saucers show no indication of the trim. Originally, these sauces were probably not linked to these cups although the Homer Laughlin Company themselves often mixed their shapes and sold them together. These saucers do offer a scalloped edge and carry an embossed pattern at the edge and work very well with the cups. One saucer has a few small nicks and a small chip (see photo) under the edge. The other saucers are without nicks, chips, or breaks.
The current price is for the 4 cup and saucer sets shown in the photos. This pattern with the orange poppies, yellow roses, and black leaves is perhaps one of the most popular Laughlin designs beyond their Fiesta. The design is informally known as "Poppy & Rose" by some collectors, "Olivia" by others, tagged as "Ivora" by some, and just labeled with a number "K4124" by others.
Please be sure to search "Poppy" within this shop to see what other pieces are available at any given time. Orders are packaged securely and combined to save on shipping.
