Wood "butter" paddles were used to scoop up butter and that is how they earned their name. But, these wooden utensils were used for much more than butter. When I was little and watched my neighbor cook, she still used one of these to cream sugar and butter when making a cake, to pat and press dough when making bread, to turn her pancakes, or most anytime that a spatula or a scraper was needed. She had several to choose from for the task at hand. Perhaps the handle on this one was painted red to make it easy to spot when looking for the favorite.

This butter paddle is 9" x 2 1/2". The end has thinned from use and the finish is smooth. No cracks.
