This antique Leather Bound Bible is in the German Language. It is titled Die Bibel, die gauze Heilige Schrift bes Alten und Neuen Teftaments New Yorf 1863. I found Heilige Schrift means Holy Scriptures. Also “Approximately 516,000 Union soldiers, or 23.4% of all Union soldiers, were immigrants; about 216,000 of these were born in Germany. New York supplied the largest number of these native-born Germans with 36,000.” It measures approx. 4 ¾ by 7 ½ inches and is 2 inches thick. There are German names in the front that are hard to read. One is Frederich with the last name torn and the other is dated 1866. The back also has Frederich Schwoerer (last name only part readable) and Fredricka Schwoerer. I found also “U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865. Military ... [Frederick Schwoerer]. Birth: abt 1830. Residence: 1890 - San Diego, California” I also found Frederick Schwerer [Frederick Schwoerer]. It will take more research to verify the past owners as I also found several others with Schwoerer as last name. It is used with M&D 1983 written inside the cover, much wear, tears, loose spine, stains, creases and much foxing.
