A fabulous Chinese export gilt sterling silver fish pill box amulet pendant, circa the 1920s-1940s.
This pendant is crafted from sterling silver in the form of an articulated fish. It has 9 segments which allows the entire body of fish to "swim" and move freely when worn.
The eyes are turquoise cabochons. The mouth opens to reveal a hidden compartment for pills or poison .
The jaw is marked "silver" and tested sterling silver.
Chinese export or trade silver refers to silver products made for export to the Western market.
The fish measures 2 1/2 inches long by 3/4” inches width and is in great estate condition! Chain not included.
The carp is considered the most favored of all fish. In China it symbolizes wealth, abundance, happiness and fertility.
It is truly a unique piece that is quite a catch!
