This large vintage Santa Claus doll was part of a window display in a candy store in Denver. c. 1923.
He has such an aura of sweet gentleness that he will be precious to any collector.
I bought this Santa from a Denver antiques dealer a very long time ago. She was told it had been in the Christmas window display of the Smith Candy Company in Denver from its' opening in 1923 until its' close in the mid sixties.
I can only verify that a Smith Candy Company owned by George L. Smith was listed in the 1935 Denver city directory and that it was located at 806 Platte Street from 1931 to 1937.
The construction of the Santa seems consistent with the 1920's. His body is sturdy cotton stuffed with sawdust. His face is molded and his facial features are painted on. His clothing is cotton felt. His leatherette belt has a brass buckle. His boots are woven cotton; the black color seems to be painted on. His arms are jointed at the shoulders. The felt is evenly faded. There are no holes or tears. There is a very small opening in the back seam that is hidden by his coat; that's how I found the sawdust stuffing. His beard has been replaced by cotton, His hair is missing.
He cannot stand alone; he'd need a stand to keep him upright. In the photos he is leaning against the wall.
He was probably made in Germany.
MEASUREMENTS: about 22 inches tall
