This antique hand painted figurine was made by German porcelain manufacturer Sitzendorf in the form of an American Revolutionary War soldier. The Continental soldier is depicted in uniform resting the barrel of a brown musket against his right side. There is a gilt pommel sword in a black scabbard on his left hip. He wears a pack and bedroll on his back and what appears to be an ammunition bag immediately beneath it. The soldier stands on a white gilt-trimmed plinth that bears the incised words "Light Infantry" on the back along with the years of the Revolutionary War "1775/83". According to published information "The Corps of Light Infantry was provided by one selected company from each infantry regiment and was one of the most prestigious and well uniformed in the Continental Army."

This figurine is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and has a glossy finish. There are two small firing/vent holes on the back related to production that are mentioned for accuracy. The figurine stands 8.375" tall as measured to the top of the feather in the hat and is 2.25" by 2.25" at the base. The underside bears a blue stamped Sitzendorf crown mark along with the impressed number "48" and an old paper label. The piece weighs 13.4 oz.

This collectible American Revolutionary War soldier figurine would make a wonderful gift for a fan of early American history or would be a great addition to a collection of porcelain militaria. A terrific find!

A note on the maker:
Porcelain was first produced in the town of Sitzendorf in 1760 but did not begin in earnest until the latter part of the 19th century. The company became well known for its Meissen style lace figures, and also produced a number of other fine porcelain figurines. Ownership of the factory changed hands several times until production ceased in 2012.
