This elegant late 19th century Bacchante pattern sterling silver sugar spoon was made by Watson Silver Company's Mechanics Sterling Company subsidiary and features an ornate Art Nouveau design. The upper part of the handle has a large Rococo cartouche with the recumbent body of a nude maiden at the center. Her arms are lifted above her head in a languorous position and she has diaphanous material draped across her hips, giving the impression that she has jut woken up and is stretching after a nap. The design is finished with a scallop shell at the tip of the terminus. The handle itself bears a dimensional bunch of grapes while the reeded bowl has the form of a large seashell. The piece has not been monogrammed.

The spoon is in excellent original condition with no removals or repairs and has not been buffed. The decoration has not been over rubbed and remains crisp and well defined. As an antique item, the spoon shows appropriate signs of age consisting of light marks to the surface of the silver that is mentioned for accuracy. The back of the handle bears Watson's Mechanics pennant "IH" mark along with the word "STERLING". The spoon measures 6" in length while the bowl is .625" at its widest point. The piece weighs in at 31.2 grams.

This Watson/Mechanics Sterling Company silver sugar spoon displays beautifully and would be a fantastic addition to a collection of antique silver in the Bacchante pattern or works equally well as a stand alone serving piece. An outstanding example of classic Art Nouveau design.
