This highly detailed antique majolica pitcher has been made in the form of a duck. The duck has been depicted standing on a green mound with its outstretched wings held back, forming a handle. The bird's head and neck are raised and its beak is slightly open. The piece features molded plumage finished in shades of blue, green and tan with a pink tinge. The tips of the wings are dark brown as are the top and back of the head. The bill and feet are yellow. Other realistic detail includes ridged toes on its webbed feet and small carved holes in the eyes representing pupils. There are also distinct carved nostrils on its bill. The top of the head has a small ovoid opening enabling access to the hollow body while the open beak functions as a spout. It should be noted that while functional the design makes use/cleaning difficult so the piece is best suited for display.
The pitcher is in very good antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece does show signs of age consisting of fine age related crazing to the glaze and minor wear to the foot. There are production related irregularities present including glaze skips and flecks of material in the glaze which are results of the production process and do not detract from the appearance of the piece. The underside of the 2lb 14oz pitcher bears a partially legible hand lettered mark reading "Made in Portugal" along with the hand painted number "1360" executed in fluorescent paint visible in black light. The pitcher stands 12.75" tall and is 7" from the tip of the spout to the back edge of the wing handle. The foot measures 4.75" from edge to edge.
This charming pitcher displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of antique majolica. A lovely piece!
