This antique George V sterling silver Montieth bowl was made by Crichton Brothers of London. The bowl has a notched rim with fluted decoration on the sides and features two large lion mask handles. The handles are composed of scallop shells located at the top flanked by pairs of Neoclassical dolphins. The dolphins have Florentine-style oval medallions bearing a foliate motif between them. The bowl is finished with a stepped pedestal foot.
The Monteith bowl is in very good condition with no removals or repairs. The side is fully and properly hallmarked for Lionel Alfred Crichton with the Lion Passant, London Assay Office mark and date mark for 1913. As an antique, the piece shows signs of age consisting of scratches/marks to the surface and a light dent beneath one of the handles. There are also etched marks on the underside mentioned for accuracy. The bowl stands 5.25" tall and is 8.5" across the rim. The foot is 4.25" in diameter and the underside reads "CRICHTON BROS NEW YORK & LONDON". The piece weighs in at 835 grams.
