This unusual antique English ironstone 17" by 12.25" platter features 6 exotic jewel toned birds set amongst colorful stalks of wheat and grasses, all of which are depicted against an ecru ground. Portions of the transfer printed birds and plants have been accented in hand painted hues helping the images stand out.
The platter is in good condition with no cracks or repairs and displays beautifully. As an antique item, the platter shows signs of age consisting of some slight scratching and fine crazing to the glaze. There are also production related anomalies present commonly found in antique ceramics including stilt marks from the kiln on the front and back, slight irregularities in the transfer pattern as well as flecks of material caught in the glaze itself. The back of the piece bears the impressed number "10" and "14" along with hand painted numbers "65" and "9". As mentioned above the platter measures 17" by 12.25" and the rim stands 2" from the tabletop. The piece is quite heavy and weighs in at 4lbs 12oz.
This charming platter would be a great addition to a collection of antique English printed and painted ceramics. Perfect for display or could be used to serve food at the table. A terrific find!
