This vintage 11" tall signed Japanese porcelain footed danju is commonly known as a jubako box and has 4 square tiered compartments topped by a domed lid. The exterior of the piece has been hand painted in a colorful "Three Friends" motif consisting of pine (Matsunoki 松), Heavenly Bamboo (Nanten 南天 ) and plum blossoms (Ume 梅). The decoration includes gilt paint and raised enamel accents.
Jubako boxes were designed to store food are have become highly collectible due to their ornate decorative appearance and overall versatility. They display beautifully on tables, dressers or vanities and are often used to hold a variety of sundry items including things like jewelry, buttons, stamps, matches and keys to name a few. The stacked boxes can also be used in a kitchen to hold spices, teabags or other things related to food.
The box is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The piece stands 11" tall and the compartments measure 6" by 6" and are 1.75" deep. The piece is quite heavy and has a total weight of 9lbs 9.5oz. As seen in photos 5, 9 and 10 the back is signed in large characters and has a seal reading 松 月 translated as "Shogetsu".
This elegant porcelain jubako box displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a grouping of jubako boxes or works equally well on its own. A lovely and useful piece!
