This antique hand colored lithograph was made by Franz Hanfstaengl of Munich and is after an original artwork titled 'Mary' by German artist Franz von Stuck (1863–1928). The piece features the image of Von Stuck's daughter Mary with ribbons tied in her hair. The ribbons have an eye-catching teal green hue which contrasts beautifully with the dark monochromatic tones used to depict the young girl.
The quality of Hanfstaengl's lithographs are outstanding and this piece is a wonderful example of his work. The hand colored piece captures the charm of von Stuck's original and as seen in the accompanying photographs, the detailed image lends the lithograph a photographic quality. The artwork is housed in a carved wood period frame finished in gilt paint and retains its original paper label on the back. That said, it should be noted that the artwork has recently been secured in the frame with new hardware along with new conservation glass and other materials. The original paper label on the back reads "FRANZ HANFSTAENGL 545 FIFTH AVE COR. 45TH ST. NEW YORK" with the hand-inked words: 'Mary' the Artist's Daughter by Franz Hanfstaengl Munich.
The lithograph displays beautifully and is in good condition. The hand tinted ribbons retain their vivid coloration. As an antique, the lithograph shows appropriate signs of age consisting of minor toning and foxing which are mentioned for accuracy. The original label also shows signs of age including discoloration and fading to the ink. The gilded frame exhibits general wear consisting of stable fissures, minor paint loss and chips/scratches, all of which are mentioned for accuracy. The visible portion of the artwork is 8.5" by 12" while the framed dimensions are 18.5" by 14.5".
This engaging hand colored lithograph would be a great addition to a collection of works by Von Stuck or Hanfstaengl, or to a larger grouping of fine antique lithographs. A terrific find!
