This antique floral intaglio American Brilliant Period Pairpoint cut glass smelling salts jar has been decorated in the elegant Viscaria pattern. The jar has a tapered body featuring two large flowers, each of which has eight beautiful hand engraved petals. The flowers have long delicate stems along with multiple deeply cut leaves. The jar is topped by a hollow knob-form stopper decorated with a large hand engraved flower which matches the two flowers found on the body. The underside of the jar is finished with a sharp 16-ray star.
The jar was made with a fitted stopper which slides into the neck and creates a tight seal. Both the stopper and bottle bear the diamond point etched number "14".
The jar is in very good condition and displays beautifully. As an antique, the piece shows signs of use consisting of minor shelf wear to the underside, fleabites to the body and chipping on two of the ridges between the petals on the lid. As seen in the accompanying photographs, these issues do not adversely affect the appearance of the jar and are mentioned for accuracy. The piece stands 6.5" tall when the stopper is in place and is 3" in diameter at the base. The jar and stopper weigh in at just under 12oz.
This lovely Viscaria smelling salts jar would be a great addition to a collection of antique intaglio glass or works equally well as stand alone decorative accent. It is wonderful display piece, or is a perfect choice for holding bath salts. An unusual antique find!
