This Soviet Era hand painted lacquer box has an unusual subject and was made in the Russian village of Kholui. The lid is beautifully decorated in the village's characteristic warm palette of oranges, browns and greens along with gold highlights. The lid lifts to reveal a brilliant cherry red interior.
The artwork on the lid is titled "The Hind" and features a woodland scene consisting of a muscular fallow deer standing above a bushy tailed fox. The deer and fox are locked in an intense gaze while a bird perched in a leafy tree observes the deer. The ornate image includes undergrowth executed with delicate brushstrokes. When tilted back and forth the gold paint shimmers in the light, adding visual interest. Be sure to look at the photos using the zoom function to appreciate the skill of the artist as well as the level of detail - it is impressive. The image on the lid is framed with scrolling gilt foliate accents which are also found on the outside of the base.
The box is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and the glossy surface is smooth to the touch. The box stands 1.125" tall and is 2" by 2.25" at the exterior. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the lower left bears the title "ЛаНЬ" while the lower right is signed by the artist. The underside of the box is hand painted with the words "Made in USSR" which have been executed in gilt. The piece comes complete with its original COA.
This Kholui lacquer box displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage Russian lacquered boxes. The piece could be used to store small items or used as a decorative accent on a table or shelf. A lovely vintage find in great condition!
