This circa 1891 sterling silver shaving mustache cup was made by Gorham and features all-over repousse floral and foliate decoration in high relief. The flowers depicted include daisies and roses among others. The interior of the piece has an attached semi-circular perforated mustache guard. The cup has a large decorative handle at one side which has been formed in an elephant trunk shape/motif. It should be noted that most examples of the genre executed in sterling have a cartouche, many of which have been monogrammed. This unusual variation does not have a cartouche and is not monogrammed.
The cup is in excellent condition with no removals or repairs. As an antique, the piece shows signs of consisting of tarnish to the interior and a few minor dimple-like dents to the underside. These issues are mentioned for accuracy and as seen in the accompanying photographs, the piece displays beautifully. The underside of the cup bears the 3-part Gorham hallmark along with a date mark indicating production in 1891. The piece also has the item number "3960" and word "STERLING".
The cup stands 2.75" tall and is 3.375" in diameter at the mouth. The mustache guard measures 1.25" from the rim to the opposite edge and is just under 2" deep. The piece weighs in at 158 grams.
This lovely 19th century silver shaving mustache cup would be a great addition to a grouping of repousse sterling or works equally well showcased on its own. An elegant antique find!
