This vintage signed and numbered Plate 1 Songbird Series Limited Edition Cardinals print was issued in 1978 and is after an original work by wildlife artist and National Medal of Arts recipient, John Ruthven. A native of Ohio, Ruthven's works are in the style of John James Audubon. His pieces feature highly detailed studies of animals and birds, often in their natural habitat.
The subject of this signed and numbered original print - entitled 'Cardinal Richmondena cardinalis' - is a pair of male northern cardinals. The vivid red and black birds are depicted on the wing with a snowcapped pine in the background. The print has been mounted under a red mat which echoes the color of the cardinals along with a wider linen colored mat. The wood frame itself is gilded with a brick red accent at the outside.
The framed artwork is in excellent vintage condition with no tears or discoloration. The visible portion of the print measures 18.5" by 14.25". The piece has been pencil signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner and is hand numbered with edition number "567/950" at the lower left.
The print has been housed under glass in a structurally sound wood frame and is ready to hang upon receipt. The outer dimensions of the frame are 28.125" by 24.25" and the frame measures 1" deep. The black paper backing is intact and comes complete with the print's original labeled manilla envelope which is tucked inside an opening created for that purpose. The label affixed to the envelope reads "Plate I Songbird Series LIMITED EDITION OF Cardinals by John A. Ruthven Number 567 WILDLIFE INTERNATIONALE INC. BOX 35-A, ROUTE 1, GEORGETOWN, OHIO 45121". The framed artwork has a total weight of 7lbs 13oz. The most recent insurance value listed online for this print is $800.
