This vintage tin glazed terracotta tile features traditional hand painted decoration in the manner of pieces produced in Coimbra Portugal. The central image depicts a brown hare leaping through stylized trees and shrubs studded with yellow and green vegetation. The image includes a large blue butterfly with curled antennae which can be seen near the top. The tile is edged in cobalt blue and has been housed in an embossed tin frame.
The framed tile is in good condition and displays beautifully. As a vintage item, the piece shows appropriate signs of age consisting of fine crazing to the glaze and finish loss/oxidation to the tin frame. There are also a few anomalies related to production which include flecks of material caught in the glaze and stable firing cracks which do not detract from the appearance of the tile and are mentioned for accuracy. The framed dimensions of the piece are 6" square at the front and approximately 6.5" at the back. The frame itself is 1.25" thick.
This charming framed tile would make a wonderful addition to a collection of other antique faience tiles or looks great showcased on its own. An appealing vintage find!
