This unusual circa 1902 English heavy gauge sterling silver sugar caster muffineer was made in Chester by silversmiths George Nathan and Ridley Hayes. The lower portion of the piece is paneled and has been designed with a twisted form. The upper portion is also paneled and has decorative scrolling foliate cut-outs and small round apertures arranged in circles, all of which were made to dispense sugar, salt or other granulated/powdered substances. The bottom is notched and the top has two corresponding bayonet style fastener tabs which fit inside them. The shaker is topped with a flame shaped turned finial.

The muffineer is in good original condition and the lid fits snugly and securely into the base. The sugar shaker has never been monogrammed or repaired and is free of gouges. As an antique, the piece shows appropriate signs of age/use consisting of minor scratching. There are also some dents/waviness present at the base, but these issues do not affect the appearance or structural integrity of the piece and it rests flat on a display surface.

The upper part of the piece is hallmarked with the lion passant and letter "B" designating production in 1902. The underside of the base is hallmarked with the lion passant and Chester assay office marks, and also bears the date mark "B" and initials "GNRH" for makers Nathan and Hayes. There are a series of numbers and letters that have been hand etched which are mentioned for accuracy.

The muffineer stands just under 6" tall as measured to the top of the finial and is 2.75" in diameter at the foot. The opening at the base is 1.75" in diameter. The item weighs in at 168 grams.

This antique English sterling muffineer displays beautifully and is sure to add an elegant touch to your table. A wonderful item to add to a collection of fine antique silver or works equally well as a stand alone piece.
