These striking green squirrel bookends were made by Van Briggle Pottery, founded in 1899 by former Rookwood Pottery designers Artus and Anne Van Briggle. Van Briggle is considered one of the great American potteries and their timeless creations are popular with art pottery collectors as well as those who appreciate fine design and craftsmanship.
The squirrels have been finished with crisp detail and are depicted sitting up on their haunches nibbling on nuts held in their front paws. Their bushy tails are raised up behind their bodies and are curled at the ends. The animals have been posed on rectangular plinths which are marked with the incised words "VAN BRIGGLE" located beneath the squirrels' tails and the Van Briggle insignia at the right rear corners.
The bookends are in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The pieces stand 7.25" tall and measure 4.75" by 3.5" at the plinths. The underside of the bookends are incised with the Van Briggle insignia of two conjoined A’s as well as finisher initials "MW" and name "Van Briggle" with "Colo. Spgs. " in upper and lower case letters. The set weighs in at 2lbs 8oz.
These appealing squirrel bookends would be a great addition to a collection of Van Briggle or other American art pottery, or work equally well as a stand alone set. A charming and useful vintage find!
