This unusual set of mid century walnut and ceramic bookends were designed by highly regarded artists Gordon and Jane Marshall Martz of Marshall Studios Incorporated, located in Veedersburg Indiana. Gordon and Jane Martz met in the late 1940's at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. After Gordon's graduation, the couple moved to Indiana in 1951 and built a kiln at Marshall Studios.
These Martz bookends consist of thick rectangular walnut slabs, each of which feature two vertical rows of hand glazed cream colored inset circular tiles on a dark grout ground. The bookends have been finished with metal supports, the underside of which are covered with protective felt lining.
The bookends are in very good condition with no cracked or missing tiles. As vintage items, the pieces show appropriate signs of use consisting of minor scuffs/scratching to the surface which is related to light use and mentioned for accuracy. The bookends stand 7.5" tall and are 5" wide. The walnut slabs are 1" thick and the supports are 4.25" deep. The pieces have a combined weight of 2lbs 6oz.
These classic Martz bookends display beautifully and would be a great addition to mid century decor, or work equally well as a decorative accent in a more eclectic setting. A striking and useful pair.
