This hard to find Art Deco embossed ceramic coffee pot was made by English pottery Maling of Newcastle. The piece has been decorated in Maling's Peona pattern which features colorful hand painted peonies in shades of yellow, pink and purple. The flowers are depicted along with light and dark green foliage and woody brown stems. The decoration is set on a rich, cobalt blue ground. The matched lid continues the floral theme with a shaded pink peony bud finial at the center along with light and dark green leaves and curvilinear brown woody stem. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the dark blue color provides a great contrast for the saturated green, rose, yellow and blue tones of the floral motif and help it to stand out.
The coffee pot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As a vintage piece, the piece shows appropriate signs of age consisting of minor crazing to the glaze located on the underside of the lid which is mentioned for accuracy. The coffee pot stands 7" tall as measured to the top of the finial and 6.5" from the front of the spout to the back of the handle. The body is 4.25" across at its widest point. The foot is 3" in diameter and bears the black Maling castle backstamp reading "MALING ESTD. 1762 NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE ENGLAND" along with the hand lettered Peona pattern number, "6504". The coffee pot weighs in at 1lb 3oz.
This charming coffee pot would be a great addition to an existing collection of Maling Peona pieces or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. A lovely and useful vintage find!
