This elegant 9 piece Edwardian Wakely & Wheeler sterling silver presentation set consists of a footed cream jug and open sugar bowl along with six spoons and a pair of sugar tongs. The set comes complete with its original fitted velvet and silk lined case bearing the name of fine jeweler Robinson & Co of Shrewsbury.
The bodies of the cream jug and sugar bowl feature a classic George III style pattern with incurved shaped borders to the rims and applied hoof feet with stylized shell decorated sockets which are attached to the bodies. The body of the cream jug is further decorated with a pair of raised parallel bands which bisect the piece, and also sports a scrolled handle to one side. The spoons have an Old English style pattern with the pointed terminals of the spoons turned up.
The sterling serving set is in excellent antique condition and shows little to no sign of use. That said, it should be noted that the sterling pieces have been hand monogrammed in script with the initials "JA". The case itself is structurally sound and the latch is fully functional. The material lining the inside of the case is a rich royal blue color and free of rips and stains and appears "as new". As an antique, the exterior of the case shows appropriate signs of age related wear consisting of minor scratches/scuffs which are noted for accuracy. The sterling set alone has a combined weight of 235 grams while the total weight of the sterling serving pieces and fitted case is 2lbs 1oz. Measurements are as follows:
(1) Cream Jug: stands 2.875" tall and measures 4.125" from the front of the spout to the back of the handle. The mouth is 2.5" from edge to edge.
(1) Open Sugar Bowl: stands 2.125" tall and measures 3.875" across the mouth.
(6) Spoons: measure 4.25" long and 0.875" across the bowl.
(1) Sugar Tongs: measure 3.5" long and 0.5" wide at the end of the handles.
The case is 9.5" deep, 10" wide and 4.5" tall. The interior bears retailer marks printed in gold which read "ESTD. 1764 Robinson & Co 9 & 10 The SQUARE SHREWSBURY".
The pieces are fully hallmarked with the lion passant, leopard's head indicating the London Assay Office, and the date letter "i" in a cartouche signifying a production date of 1904-1905. The pieces also have Wakely & Wheeler maker's mark consisting of the initials "JW" over "FCW" for James Wakely and Frank Clarke Wheeler located within a trefoil shaped cartouche.
This English Edwardian sterling silver cream and sugar presentation set is in unusually good condition and displays beautifully. It would make a fabulous gift, or may be just what you have been looking for to use at your own table. A lovely antique find.
