This rare Weller Ware art pottery flower frog has been made in the form of a colorful bird resembling a cockatoo or parrot. The bird has a glossy finish typical of Weller's Brighton pieces and features red, green and yellow plumage along with a brown beak and feet. The bird has been depicted perched upon a figural tree stump with 12 holes around the perimeter of the base and 2 more on the tree stump, all of which were designed to accommodate flowers. The piece comes with an unmarked circular undertray finished in dark brown glaze.
The flower frog is in good original condition, and as an antique item shows appropriate signs of age consisting of fine crazing to the glaze. There is a production related firing crack present on the bird's crest along with anomalies related to glaze application, reflecting the hand finished nature of the piece and adding to its overall antique vibe. It should also be noted that the tips of the birds wings are worn with areas that are rough to the touch. As seen in the accompanying photographs, these issues do not detract from the appearance of the piece and are mentioned for accuracy. The underside of the piece bears an old label reading "WELLER WARE" and is incised with the letter "x". The flower frog is 9.5" tall and approximately 8.5" from the front of the head to the back of the tail. The circular base is 4.625" in diameter.
The dish is also in good antique condition with no chips or cracks. It should be noted that there are irregularities in the glaze which include pooling and flecks of material caught in the glaze itself which are mentioned for accuracy. The underside of the piece is largely unglazed and retains a glaze hand print. The dish itself is 8" in diameter as measured from the outside of the rim and stands 1.25" tall.
The pieces have a combined weight of 4lbs 2oz.
This unusual flower frog displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a collection of antique American art pottery. Great for display or could be used as intended. A charming antique find!
