This rare Arts and Crafts art pottery triple candleholder centerpiece bowl was made by Fulper Pottery of New Jersey soon after the turn of the 20th century. Fulper traces its origins to 1814 and started out as Hill Pottery. The works were purchased by Hill employee Abram Fulper and became known as Fulper by the 1860's. The company shifted focus from making utilitarian pieces like crocks and cookware to art pottery shortly after the turn of the century.
Fulper's early art pottery pieces had an Asian influence which transitioned to classic and Arts and Crafts forms with the arrival of ceramics engineer Martin Stangl in 1910. Fulper's designs and distinctive glazes went on to win awards, including the Gold Medal of Honor at San Francisco's 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition.
This unusual Fulper Arts and Crafts piece has been made in the form of a low, footed bowl with three single light candleholders evenly spaced around the perimeter. The exterior of the bowl is finished in Cat's Eye Flambe glaze while the interior has a blue center with green highlights.
The bowl is quite heavy for its size, weighing in at 3 lbs 10.5 oz. It is largely in good condition with some old chips to the bottom of the feet. It should also be noted that there is some scratching to the glaze in the base of the piece as well as glaze pops and other irregularities in the application of glaze related to production. In addition, the stems of the candleholders are slightly out of plumb . As seen in the accompanying photographs, these issues do not detract from the appearance of the piece and are mentioned for accuracy. The bowl stands just over 3" to the rim and 6" to the top of the candleholders. The mouth is 8" from edge to edge. The foot bears Fulper's early oval racetrack black ink stamp mark along with the remnants of a paper label.
This striking Arts and Crafts triple candleholder centerpiece bowl displays beautifully and would be a great addition to an existing collection of Fulper, or to a grouping of early 20th century art pottery by other manufacturers. A distinctive piece!
