This rare 19th century biscuit barrel is composed of Rainbow Mother-of-Pearl satin glass. The piece has wide pastel stripes in shades of pink, yellow and blue and has been finished with a raindrop trapped air pattern. The exterior of the glass is hand painted in enamel and features pansy blossoms and buds located along delicate stems and leaves.

The biscuit barrel comes complete with its original metal collar, handle and lid, all of which have been finished in gilt. The collar has a rope like trim at the base while the handle is finished with a love-knot detail at the apex. The lid itself has an elaborate embossed band which runs around the exterior. The embossed band is made up of a series of stylized hearts decorated with foliate details. The top of the lid bears faint traces of an old illegible monogram while the interior is stamped "042".

The glass portion of the biscuit barrel is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or bruising. That said, it should be noted that there are some anomalies in the glass which are a result of the production process along with some light marks to the exterior of the glass, all of which do not detract from the appearance of the piece and are mentioned for accuracy. The metal collar, handle and lid are original to the piece and have undergone no repairs. As seen in the accompanying photos, the gilt does have age related discoloration/tarnish which I have not attempted to remove. The underside of the barrel exhibits appropriate signs of minor shelf wear, which is also noted for accuracy. The enamel painting on the exterior is largely intact with some loss on the accents painted on the leaves. The maker of this late 19th century biscuit barrel piece is unknown but resembles pieces manufactured by Mt Washington glass.

The barrel stands 10.25" to the top of the handle when it is extended and 6.25" to the top of the collar. The mouth of the jar is 5" from edge to edge, and the base is 4" in diameter. The piece weighs in at 2lbs 4oz.

This gorgeous biscuit barrel displays beautifully and would be a fabulous addition to a collection of antique biscuit barrels, or to a grouping of fine Victorian art glass. Truly a lovely object.
