This pair of Arts and Crafts hammered copper sconces was made by highly regarded company Roycroft. Founded in 1895 by writer and entrepreneur Elbert Hubbard, the Roycroft community was made up of artists and social reformists living and working in East Aurora, New York, outside of the city of Buffalo. The Roycrofters were a self-sustaining group who fully embraced the Arts and Crafts philosophy of hand made goods, and produced a variety of items on site including printed works, furniture and copper items. Hubbard died tragically aboard the RMS Lusitania in 1915, and the company continued under the direction of his son Elbert II until closing its doors in 1938 due to the economic slowdown resulting from the Great Depression.
Roycroft's copper shop originally opened soon after the turn of the century in order to serve the needs of the community, and provided hardware and other items for the campus's buildings. By the early 1910's, the shop shifted its focus to include producing bookends, lamps and other decorative items. These circa 1920's copper sconces have a great Arts and Crafts design with traditional shield-shaped backs which have been finished with hammered decoration. The pieces also feature large ovoid accents which have a smooth surface, helping them to better reflect candle light. The lower parts of the sconces have candle cups and drip trays which are attached to the backs of the sconces by virtue of three square nail-head rivets.
The bookends are in very good structural condition with no restorations or repairs and bear their original brown finish which has not been cleaned or polished. As vintage items, the sconces show appropriate signs of wear related to age and use consisting of some scratches and finish unevenness. As seen in photo 5, the back of the sconces show the most sign of wear which is not evident when the sconces are in use and is mentioned for accuracy.
The sconces are 9.75" long at their highest point and just over 3.5" across at their widest point, and project approximately 3" from the wall at the base. The back of the pieces bear the die-stamped Roycroft mark consisting of an encircled letter "R" topped by a cross. The pieces have a combined weight of 1lb 2.4oz.
These lovely hammered copper wall sconces would be a great addition to a collection of Arts and Crafts furnishings, or work equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. A distinctive vintage find!
