This colorful antique Frie Onnaing majolica pitcher was made by Faïencerie d'Onnaing, located in northwestern France near the border of Belguim. Onnaing was founded in 1821 by Charles de Bousies and was in production until 1938. The company was quite prolific and produced a variety of pieces including planters, vases, figural and anthropomorphic pitchers, umbrella stands, coin banks and other items.

This particular pitcher is from Onnaing's Rustic range and is known as "Flamands", which translates from French as "Flemish". The piece features a group of Flemish revelers dancing and drinking to music in an outdoor setting next to a large stone wall. The pitcher's thick handle resembles a large tree trunk or vine which spreads out at the top of the piece to form a lush band of leaves and berries. The opposite side of the pitcher is also decorated with a tree motif. The tree rises from the base of the piece and terminates in a mask head spout depicting Bacchus, the god of wine. The interior of the pitcher is finished in Onnaing's characteristic deep rose color.

The pitcher is in very good antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece does show signs of age - namely minor wear to the foot resulting from display. There are also irregularities in the glaze coverage including pooling and glaze pops which are attributable to the production process and do not detract from the appearance of the piece. The foot of the 2lb 4oz pitcher is impressed with the mark "FRIE ONNAING" along with the company's shield and crown blazon and model number of the piece, "714". It is also marked "MADE IN FRANCE". The pitcher stands 8.75" tall and is 7" from the tip of the spout to the back edge of the handle. The foot is 5" in diameter.

This charming pitcher displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of antique French majolica. An appealing and useful piece!
