This elegant sterling silver jewelry box was made by R. Blackinton & Company, founded in 1862 by Walter Ballou and Roswell Blackinton in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Blackinton was recognized for the skill of its silvermiths and produced a variety of pieces including flatware and holloware along with gold and silver jewelry. The company was purchased by the Raimond Silver Manufacturing Company of Chelsea, Massachusetts in the 1960's.

This late 19th century silver jewelry box is rectangular in shape and has a domed lid. The exterior features an elaborate hand chased foliate pattern made up of scrolling acanthus leaves accented by small flowers. The decoration on the lid includes a reserve which has been monogrammed with initials which appear to read "ALG". The interior of the piece is lined in its original red velvet covering.

The exterior of the box is largely in good antique condition with no removals, repairs or alterations. The decoration on the exterior is clear and crisp, while the underside of the box shows signs of light wear commensurate with age and use. It should also be noted that there are hard-to-see minor indents on two of the four rounded corners of the lid. As seen in photos 1. 3 and 4, the lid is squarely aligned with the bottom of the box but does not close completely at the front, leaving a small gap.

The box's locking mechanism is missing some components so the lock itself is not functional, and the original key is not present. As mentioned above, the interior of the box bears its original 100+ year old velvet lining which is peeling away from the silver in some areas and also has signs of extensive wear to the nap along with discoloration. If desired, the velvet can be removed/replaced or the box can be used with its current lining.

The underside of the box bears Blackinton's hallmark used before 1900, which consists of a letter "B" pierced by a sword. The piece is also marked with the word "STERLING" along with the number "2161". The box measures 5.5" by 3.25" and stands 1.75" tall. It weighs in at 10.5oz.

This charming box displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a collection of antique silver. A lovely antique find!
