Deep intaglio work details the face of a Roman soldier’s face in profile, carved within a flat tablet of opal. The opal tablet is set with multiple prongs, with a fully-backed enclosure, to ensure a sturdy setting. The back features a bar-style spear in both yellow and white 18k gold, along with a simple pin and hook closure, for attaching the brooch to your bag or lapel. This unique, beautiful piece does have a break in the opal, so we are offering it here for an incredible discounted price. Add this beauty to your collection now.
Materials and Features:
Carved flat sculpture Roman Soldier head in profile, in opal
18k white and yellow gold [acid tested]
6.38 g weight
5.0 cm length
Condition: There is a clear line break through the opal, about halfway down the soldier’s face. The piece appears to have been re-set slightly off-center, resulting in the bottom half just below the nose being slight further back. Still, both pieces of the opal are sturdily-set in prong settings. The carved relief work is deep and detailed, with a pleasant color distribution within the opal itself; the face and bottom portion of the helmet bear a pleasant blue hue, with subtle bands of pink and green within, darkening as it goes further up near the fringe of the helmet. The gold is a high-quality 18k white and yellow; the spear and pin backing it firmly attached to the base of the opal setting. There is minor and typical age wear to the piece, other than what was described above; some faint scratches here and there, and some darkened patina finishing, reflective of the age of the piece.
