Crown Devon Black Back Stamp Mark
1949 by Shorter & Sons of Staffordshire
Excellent bright florid colors showing no signs of damage or repairs
This large Father Neptune jug replete with sea horse handle and lobster base is a fabulous statement piece. Shorter and Sons designed and made the original mugs as evidenced by the impressed name on the base. Fielding & Co Pottery bought them and their stock. Fielding adopted the name of Crown Devon in 1905. Dating these toby jugs or mugs becomes easier when referencing “Toby & Character Jugs of the 20th Century and their Makers” by David C. Fastenau & Stephen M. Mullins
On page 87 gives a list of production dates for many of the Fielding/Shorter jugs.
