This impressive Italian micro-mosaic pin is set in black glass or onyx and depicts Roman ruins. Micro-mosaics are scenes that are made out of extremely small tiles of stone, glass or other materials. Italian micro-mosaics special souvenirs that were often purchased on Grand Tours of Europe in the late 1800s.
Older example, such as this brooch, are more intricate, have smaller tiles, and generally have better workmanship.
This brooch has a rope like gold-tone or gold plated rope like setting. The simple c-clasp and pin that extends beyond the brooch definitely identifies this as an early piece.
The pin measures approximately 1" x 7/8" and is in very good vintage condition. There are a few flakes along the edge of the black surround that are only noticeable under magnification or very close inspection. My picture exaggerates them. They do not detract and I only mention for full disclosure.
What a wonderful addition to any Micro-mosaic collection or a fabulous gift.
