Meerschaum is the German name applied to a material used for making smoking pipes made from sepiolite, a soft, white clay mineral. About half of the world’s sepiolite reserves are found in deposits in Spain. Turkey is widely known for having the best known deposits that are used for manufacturing Meerschaum pipes. The use of Meerschaum to produce smoking pipes can be traced as far back as 1723.
