What an adorable little brooch! Fascinating work, this Italian micromosaic artistry! It became fashionable when the remains of Pompeii were discovered in 1748 under the ashes of the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius, and the first micromosaic pieces made in Naples and Rome were miniatures of temple ruins and copies of the frescos found in the villas of Pompeii. Later they became highly desirable 'souvenir' items bought by tourists visiting Italy. Today, the collectors are numerous and a brooch like this is very sought after because of its fine workmanship and its unusual shape. The combination of vivid orange and turquoise colors also makes it so special. It measures just 1 x 1" (25 x 25 mm) and is in excellent vintage condition with no tesserae missing. It is obviously mounted on brass and has a C clasp. This lovely piece will ship Priority registered airmail for $7 in the countries neighboring Switzerland and $9 anywhere else in the world. If you collect micromosaic jewelry, this fascinating little brooch would be a great addition to your collection!
