THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY was based on a true LOVE story between a married woman and a photographer that was passing through her town in MADISON COUNTY, Iowa. It is one of my favorite romantic stories. A motion picture was made from the book and it was also a great success!!
I an not going to attempt to tell you more of the story; you must read it for yourself and be in your own little world. I do not want to take any pleasure away from you. I think I can say That this is in the same category as LOVE STORY by Eric Siegel that was soo popular in the 60's.
I was also most fortunate to find the ever so wonderful cook book that is a tie in to the novel. It contains 512 pages with a patchwork of recipes, anecdotes, stories, and traditions from St. Joseph's Parish in Madison County, Iowa, where the simple values of faith, family, and friends have not been forgotten.
Shortly after the book was published I worked with a woman named Dori who was fairly new in New York City. She had lived in CA for many years. Originally, she had lived in Massachusetts. When she was in high school she fell in love with a boy who was French Canadian. He lived nearby in her town. They had planned on marring soon after high school. Her father was against this marriage so he up-rooted his family and move them to California. Dori never forgot this boy, her one true love. She did marry but was not happy. Later after many years she was divorced.
He was sent into the service by his father and when he came out his father told him it was time to marry. He still was in love with Dori. His father then went to Canada and picked out a French Canadian wife for him. He had children and after they were grown, moved to Florida. He had been very unhappy all those years. He was married to a woman who he did not love.
Dori was a romantic at heart and she would mention the story of the Bridges Of Madison County many times...and she thought of her long lost love.
One day Dori went away for the weekend and the small inn that she stayed at met a young man checking in while she was checking out. He had the same name as her lost love. She told him that she knew a man of the same name in her youth...and believe it or not...his father was her lost love!!!! The young man took her name and phone number and HE did called her. They were ever so happy talking to each other after so many years. They discovered that they both still felt love for each other. He came to NYC to see her and he told her his story. He also told her that he felt life was not worth living anymore...and now he felt that he was re-born.
Dori ended up moving to New England with him...back to their roots. She had planned to write a book about THEIR LOVE STORY. I do not know what happened for I never heard from her again.
Both books are hard to part with, but since I am in the business someday they will pop up again! That is what I tell myself when I put an item in my shop that I just LOVE!! You will LOVE these too!
