This is my coat, the one that I loved most and ENJOYED wearing the most!! It is by a most talented designer, FRANK MASANDREA. This coat had a full page in VOGUE Magazine...which I lost through the years.
I had worked for Hystron Fibers..remember TREVIRA Polyester, well they made the fiber. I created a Fabric Library for them in the mid 1960's from fabrics that were made with the TREVIRA fiber. I would go out in the market and visit the textile mills and converters and select fashion forward fabrics to display in the TREVIRA Fabric Library. I would then give presentations to the apparel designers of that season's fabrics with the intention of them being interested enough to go and buy for their up-coming collection. One of the designers that visited the Fabric Library was Frank Masandrea. He invited me to his showroom to see his current collection. He was doing coats at that time....and I fell in LOVE with this Royal Stuart Red Plaid Coat that was semi-fitted...fitted on top and flared at the skirt...PLUS it had a detachable cape collar!!! It is beautifully tailored...lined in red & green taffeta...including the fringed cape. In 1969 we had the coldest winter in NYC and I was wearing this mini-coat and I ended up in the hospital!! But it was worth it!!
I also have a similar story about Elinor Brenner. I purchased many dresses from her showroom with out trying them on!!! They all fit so well. I am on the lookout for her dresses for my shop. I saved mine for many years and when I moved I gave all my 60's and 70's outfits to a young girl who did not have many clothes.
The coat lost its label over the years. I wore a size 6-8 at that time. The measurements are: Waist 32"; Sleeves 23" long; Shoulder to Shoulder 16"; Coat Length 40"; Cape length 15" with 3" fringe.; It is in excellent condition!!! No detectable damages. I was 5'7" and weighed 121 pounds at that time. Don't ask now!!!
FOOTNOTE: Unfortunately, Frank Masandrea passed away at an early age in the late 1980's. He was then well established in the Bridal Field.
