This is a striking round lacquer box with a miniature painting on top showing a romantic couple, possible from a Russian folk tale, wearing peasant dress, standing among trees and shrubs. The girl’s clothing of yellow, green and reddish-pink is iridescent. The exterior of the box is glossy black; it is glossy red inside. The lid is removable and there is an etched gold border around the outside of the lower portion of the box.
It measures 3 ¾” in diameter.
The box is signed at the lower edge of the lid with Fedoskino 1988 to the left, and the artist’s name, Beacoba O., to the right. This is obviously a Soviet era piece, but is not marked as such, so probably was not made for export. There is a certificate inside the box, somewhat worn (see photo).
There are a number of tiny grains (for want of a better word) under the lacquer, mostly on the background, but a few on the young man’s tunic.
These are from the manufacture, but they only show when the box lid is turned under a light. The piece is still gorgeous.
